Thoughts on Teledentistry so far?

Main Post:

Due to COVID-19 a lot of dentists have started to use teledentistry within their practice. I'm curious how everyone's reactions to it are.

For dentists: Did your practice start using them? How is it? Will you continue to use them after social distancing ends?

For patients: have you tried to get in touch with a dentist online? What was the experience like?

Is teledentistry a thing?

Main Post:

An associate DDS dreaming of traveling the world with my husband who works from home. Only issue is I’m a dentist and I’ve accepted my job, by nature, could never be remote. Then, today, my husband asked me about teledentistry jobs that I could pursue while working remotely. Anyone have any info or experience with this? What’s the earning potential of not doing any treatment and are there actual jobs for remote dentists?

Top Comment: There are companies that do teledentistry. You make about $50 per exam before insurance. Your exam is emergencies that involve prescribing medications or referring patients. Realistically you see about 4 patients a month. Not many people would pay for teledentistry when they can ask Reddit or go see someone for actual treatment.

Should I trust a dentist who has a virtual tour of their clinic?

Main Post:

I am currently looking for dentists since I am no longer a student and it's my first time searching for one. I see some dental offices without any photos of their clinic with great reviews, and others with pictures and a virtual tour with the same type of reviews, but are slightly farther. I don't want to travel or make the mistake of going to the wrong dentist, so I want to see if there is a way of checking the quality of the dental office before walking in. Please let me know.

Just read the reviews?

I don't get it, are you wondering if you should be focusing on a lack/abundance of photos/videos to determine if they're good instead?

Also, the title of your post suggests there may be something shady about virtual tours for dentist's offices.

Ask a dentist online chat side gig

Main Post:

-Can you make money by answering people’s questions online as a licensed dentist? Like a site where people chat questions to you as a dentist.

-If these aren’t virtual/voice appointments and you aren’t diagnosing/prescribing and you are just answering general questions people have, does this need to be covered by malpractice?

Top Comment: The short answer is no. That is the good thing about dentistry (as far as protection from AI). You really have to have an exam to determine a diagnosis (if thats the question), you certainly can’t treat anything remotely, if a person is motivated to find answers to hypothetical academic questions they can find them, and (with no evidence to support this supposition) there will be no one willing to pay you an amount to make it worth your time.........but really, try it and tell me if you prove me wrong. Dentists can’t even get people to pay them well to attend office visits. Do you really think people will pay for random internet queries?

Online dental consultant

Main Post:

Apparently our clinic is closed for a month due to renovations. I'm thinking on working as an online dental consultant at least for a while since I've got nothing to do. Can you guys recommend a website or page that would be nice to apply?

I've never done online jobs before so I'm pretty new to this. And also how much on average do dentists earn on online consultations?

Top Comment:

If you are in the US I think this is state dependent.

You could also just work as a locum tenens dentist. There are temp agencies you can sign up with if you can let dentists in your area know you’ll be temping in case they hear of anything

Dental Virtual Assistants

Main Post:

I am making a case study about Dental Virtual Assistants. What are your thoughts about the demands for VA in the Dental field. Are Dentists now more open in hiring a VA?
